White Mans Burden

Based on his poem, it seemed that Kipling thought it was the whites duty to rule the native people. He believes that the whites were the superior people and that the natives needed to be ruled. He conveys this message by describing them as, "new caught, sullen peoples / half-devil, half-child" which shows that Kipling views  the natives as lower quality. He implies the natives aren't completely human but instead half human and half monster. Kipling also says "have done with childish days". This shows that Kipling believed that the way the natives ruled themselves before was childish compared to the European rule. He wants the Natives to let go of their old way and let themselves be ruled by the Europeans because they are superior. To further reinforce his point that the way the natives ruled themselves was inferior the the whites he refers to their kings rule as "tawdry". Kipling describes the Europeans as better and a Guard. This is clear evidence that Kipling believes the whites to be superior. He implies that the Whites are better and that it is their duty to guard those that are lesser than them. Kipling believes that the whites are the supreme race and he conveys this idea through is poems and the language he uses in them.

Why are all the European colonies in Africa so split up. Was it on purpose or just a whoever gets there first type deal?
Why wasn't South America colonized?
How were do these colonies effect the world wars?
What where the major benefits from the colonized areas?
What allowed Ethiopia to escape colonization?

China's drug problem

Lin Zexu clearly has a problem with opium. Not that he is addicted but instead his country is and he does like this. Lin hates opium and conveys this dislike by describing opium as posion and referring to its odor as repugnant. He also says heaven and the gods are upset by its use and that it should be plowed down and replaced with food crops. So it is clear he doesn't like it. The Chinese government has put forth several laws that if broken are punishable by death to stops the importation of opium. Any opium peddler caught will be killed. This shows that china saw this as a major threat and attempted to steer people away by killing others. Classic history problem solving.

changes

  • easier work
  • more family time
  • production of more goods
  • advancement in technology
  • the rich get richer and the poor get poorer
  • things become cheaper
  • with new technology and a supply of goods life expectancy and wellness of people will increasingly become better.
  • goods can be transported over distances which means trade increases.
  • cultures blend with the increase of trade
  • population increases
  • children can be sent to work because labor inst specialized
  • wealth inst dependent on the expensive items you are able to buy and is more on how many you have
  • I find the chain reaction of technology very interesting, not relevant to the post but yeah.
reactions
the people were upset with the fact they lost their jobs and they tried they didn't appreciate that. so they tried to break everything. i would say they are reactionary.

I always enjoy ted talks. They are wonderful and refreshing to hear smart intelligent people after spending a day in high school. I like Niall Ferguson. He was an interesting speaker and he had a cool accent. He was also funny, I liked the joke about 1776. I agree with his idea of the 6 apps. It makes sense and is a pretty good way of simplifing the couple idea.

Fabian rejects Christianity

Fabian does not like Christianity. He calls it a perversed and cursed faith. During his time Japan believed in the imperial dignity of the gods. Meaning the rulers of Japan were godly. This is a very common practice in Japan and China. Fabian also talks about Buddhism and his return to it. Buddhism was the common religion in Japan and Fabian makes several references about returning to and abiding to Buddhism. Also Fabian talks about the Europeans invasion of Asia. Because they were following the way of their god or Deus, Europeans take it upon themselves to invade everything they can see and spread/force their religion to other people. In short Fabian disliked Christians.

Maximize the slave Buisness

Based on Equiano's account the members of the slave Buisness took several measures to ensure maximum profit. The biggest of which was keeping the slaves alive. The conditions on the boats where harsh and cruel, Equiano's mentioned the smell was unlike anything he had smelt before. These conditions coupled with the fact they were slaves made suicide seem like a easy way out of the torture. However the slave traders would not allow that because if all the slaves jumped off the side of the boat they would lose their Buisness. So the slave traders, chained the slaves and kept close eyes on them. They also whipped those who tried to jump or refused to eat. The slave traders also forced the slaves to eat so that they would starve and die. Not pretty conditions

DBQ essay

I thought the essay was interesting. it was nice not having to know background information which is always stressful. However this essay was a little stressful itself because it is long. perhaps I wasn't as focused as I could have been but i also didn't have to make the groups and I still didn't finish. so time will be an issue. Other than that it was fairly straightforward. the template that was on the board was very useful. Im interested to see how the that goes.

Videos

When assuring the videos I think content matters most. You have to make sure you got all the material in and that you demonstrate you read and unepderstood the section clearly. It needs to be made so that those watching the video can get a majority of the information you collected and chose to present. I also think because it is a video project there needs to be some level of creativity. How did a group present the information. Was it helpful in conveying the content or distracting. There needs to be a little something so that the video isn't reciting straight facts. From the videos I watched Tj and Manas did a good job. They presented the information well it is was funny and not so boring I wanted to exit the page. So good job you two.

Christopher Columbus

As children we ave the unique ability to belive anything we are told. Many people take advantage of that and we end up with days like Christopher Columbus Day. One of two holidays named after somebody in the United States. I have never given it much thought but James Loewen's chapter on Christopher Columbus from his book Lies My Teacher Told Me, is eye opening. Not only is Christopher Columbus not really the discoverer of the "new world", evidence shows others "discovered it before him" but he isn't the hero we are told he is. Historians try to make Christopher a relatible character much like that from a book instead of giving the facts. He enslaved, raped and killed many of the Local people he met, and is far from the hero everyone thinks he is. B and Z fall short in their explanation of Christopher. They don't take two pages to describe him or try and make him relatable but they also don't talk about the aweful things he did while he was in the "new world".

Chinese are first?

Menzies provides a very interesting argument. From what was viewed in the video I would say he does have a compelling argument. He has several maps form around 1420ish that show islands that are from the western world. These were recorded before Europeans had ever set foot in the America's. The big question is, if the Chinese did come to America why didn't they leave a lasting impression, why isn't there any clear evidence they were there. Menzies attempts answer this by citing a paper from several geneticists. Some Indian DNA is closer related to Chinese DNA than it is European DNA and what is even more interesting is each spot that this DNA was found, was in the exact spot Menzies suggests the chines landed. He also believes a mysterious road under water in Central America, is of Chinese construct and was a slip way for the ships that where caught in a storm. So there is a little evidence that the Chinese were actually present. I am about 95% on board with Menzies theory. I'm still brain washed that Christopher Columbus was the first to visit the America's. If Menzies produces 1 or 2 more pieces of evidence that the Chinese were present he will win my support. Got to get that expanded core.

Oceanic voyages

The two way voyages between Tahiti and Hawaii as well as other island in Oceana play a crucial role in the development in societies. The people who travel bring the culture from their island and spread it to the next. This can include gods and other things such as dancing. Also the introduction of new people can also lead to a new chiefly line. Not only do these voyages effect those who are visted but the people making the trip can also send back the culture from the place they have visted to their original home. Its a new way street. These voyages played a crucial role on the development of oceanic cultures.

Muslim views of europeans

Think given time any body can work out their differences. In the time period we are discussing the Muslims view the Europeans as savage and cruel. Their ways are inhuman and very diffrent to what the Muslims do. Europeans are engaged in a conflict due to different lifestyles and different religions. Again over time they might be able to live harmoniously but these differences are going to make the process long and hard.

Learning like the griots

I don't think I would want to learn like the griots. First they only learn their history it's more interesting to learn about everybody's history. Second it is all they do. I personally have other things I would rather do than learn history (no offense). And third I don't want to memorize all that history. I like the idea that that is how they teach their history and that somebody out their does it. I just wouldn't want to learn like that.

Essay evaluation

After looking over my essays several patterns have become evident. For the most part evidence isn't a problem which means that I know the material. How prefer global context for both forms of the essays is one of the things that gets me. Perhaps I don't understand what I'm supposed to do or I'm just having trouble thinking of things other than what the essay is on. I've never been able to get expanded core because I usually miss one of the basic core which doesn't allow me to get expanded core.

History time line

In class we talked about visualizing history from the begining to now. I think it is always good to have a main time line to give you an idea about the chronology of everything. Sometimes things just fit when you understand what came when. But that isn't all that is important because you also née to people and places and what they did as well as when. So I think the answer to this would be a multilayered time line or a time line with other boxes around it. Something of the sort. Basically you have a central time line, around it are boxes of information seperated into regions with facts. Each fact has a line to its time on the central time line.

It would look a little prettier but that is the idea

What I have learned

I thought this was a very interesting project. Im not one of those people that enjoys  the court of law but it is definitely very interesting. I got mixed up at how a lawyer was supposed to do his job. I thought of it more as a debate than asking just asking questions. But its a learning process. As for the material its self the mongols are a very impressive society. They have created the largest land based empire the world has ever seen. But that comes at the consequence of thousands of innocent lives. Their strategies and ways bring about questions such as, did they commit genocide or did they kidnap people. Was it all part of the war and therefor accused or did it start out as war and then turn into something much worse. I believe that there is no clear answer people will agree on. War is a tricky subject. everybody is quick to judge from a distance but when you get stuck in the middle of it, you lose your head and things happen. I do believe prosecution won the trial but maybe i'm just biased.

What I've been doing

A review of the several nights work.
For the past couple nights I have been watching the videos and I have read the chapter. I'm taking notes on each of the defense characters as well as formulating rough questions that I may ask during the trial in order to prove our point. Im finishing the last of the videos tonight and tomorrow I will go over my notes and my classmates notes in order to finalize questions and make sure I have a clear understanding of the subject.
